The Doctor's Channel and VerusMed Announce Partnership to Provide Physicians With Concise, Reliable Information
Multiple Channels of Information Allow Doctors to Learn From Peers In Formats Amenable to Hectic Schedules

NEW YORK, NY - January 10, 2008 - The Doctor's Channel (www.thedoctorschannel.com), hailed by CNBC as the "educational YouTube" for doctors, and VerusMed (www.verusmed.com), which provides timely, unbiased medical information to physicians, health care professionals and industry executives, today announced a partnership that will provide thousands of neurologists with short, 1-2 minute streaming videos that summarize articles included in VerusMed's weekly publication, VerusMed Neurology Update.

"Today's physician often doesn't have the time to sift through pages of medical research to find the bottom line, but it's crucial they stay up-to-speed on medical advances, in order to best serve their patients," explained The Doctor's Channel President David Best, MD, MBA. "The marriage of VerusMed Neurology Update and The Doctor's Channel is the next logical step in providing bite-sized information to time-starved physicians by letting them choose the format that best suits their lifestyle."

VerusMed Neurology Update is a weekly publication, covering major neurological conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. The publication is distributed via fax and email to thousands of neurologists, summarizing research published in major peer-reviewed medical journals in the form of clinical news briefs.

In order to create a seamless network of information for physicians, VerusMed will provide clinical news briefs from VerusMed Neurology Update to The Doctor's Channel, which will then create short videos summarizing key briefs. The videos will be viewable online at The Doctor's Channel and at the newly redesigned and expanded VerusMed Web site, where physicians access and read clinical news briefs across multiple therapeutic categories.

"With only a few moments to spare in between rounds or appointments, doctors have to be very selective with their sources of information," said Scott McQuigg, CEO of VerusMed. "Our partnership with The Doctor's Channel provides us with yet another avenue to offer doctors pertinent information in a format that's conducive to a hectic schedule."

Doctors who register on The Doctor's Channel can personalize their experience by joining groups related to individual interests, sending and receiving personalized messages, and storing their favorite videos. When viewing certain pharmaceutical company sponsored videos, doctors can even request additional information or samples from a sales representative with just one click of the mouse.

VerusMed Unveils Evidence Grading System And Newly Redesigned VerusMed.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn., January 8, 2008 -- VerusMed, a ConnectivHealth company, today announced the launch of its groundbreaking evidence grading system for all VerusMed clinical news briefs. VerusMed's evidence grading scale is among the first to be introduced to U.S. physicians through an easy-to-access medical information service. The launch coincides with the release of the newly redesigned and expanded VerusMed Website, verusmed.com.

VerusMed, which provides clinical news briefs to physicians and other health care professionals in dozens of therapeutic categories, is continuously enhancing all aspects of its physician information services. With its new evidence grading system, each clinical study reported on will be reviewed for quality of evidence and then assigned an appropriate grade, using a four-point scale.

"By providing evidence grades to our clinical news briefs, physician readers will be able to quickly and efficiently review the quality of the literature being discussed," said June Manning, VerusMed editor-in-chief. "With the addition of the evidence grading system, each of VerusMed's clinical news stories will receive an evidence grade that will appear next to the headline," she added.

Manning noted that VerusMed's innovative evidence grading system is similar to grading systems used by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), the American Medical Association, British Medical Journal, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Cochrane Collaboration, among others.

Jeff Andrews, M.D., chair of VerusMed's editorial advisory board and senior fellow of the Vanderbilt Center for Evidence-Based Medicine, developed VerusMed's evidence grading system, using standards created by the internationally recognized Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation Working Group, also known as GRADE (http://www.gradeworkinggroup.org), of which he is a member.

"Medical evidence, or the recommendations that are based on the evidence, can be of different quality levels," said Andrews. "Since poor quality evidence can lead to recommendations that are not in a patient's best interest, it is essential for physicians to know whether a study is strong or weak."

Andrews explained that sources of evidence range from small laboratory studies, or case reports, to well-designed, large clinical studies. "Based on the grade that is assigned, physicians can decide whether they want to continue reading the article or reference it for future reading," he said.

A number of factors are considered when assigning an evidence grade:

  • Study design - therapeutic, prognostic, diagnostic or economic/decision analysis
  • Number of study patients and the percentage of follow-up
  • Statistical power
  • Bias and influence
  • Effect size
  • Balance of benefits and risks

"Physicians have continually expressed to us that their most precious limited resource is time," said Scott McQuigg, CEO of ConnectivHealth. "We developed our new evidence grading system so that physicians can quickly determine the relevancy of information and invest their time in the studies that will have the greatest impact in their practice and for their patients."

In addition to the new evidence grading system, VerusMed's redesigned verusmed.com has many new features designed to help physicians quickly access relevant medical news and information by therapeutic area. The site's expanded features include online video, most read stories, most e-mailed stories and searchable archives.

Primary Care Physicians Need Better Access to More Concise, Timely Medical Information
VerusMed survey uncovers challenges in delivering crucial information

NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 2, 2007 -- As the vanguard among health care practitioners, primary care physicians face a daunting task. Not only must they know how to diagnose and treat a multitude of health conditions in patients of all ages, but they must also stay informed of the changes and advances that continually outdate current treatment guidelines.

A VerusMed information needs survey of primary care physicians found that even though the majority of the physicians polled spend one to three or more hours per week reading medical research and news, they still believe that gaps exist in the information they receive, citing dozens of specific examples such as a lack of information on patient safety, psychiatry and specific conditions such as diabetes. They also say they are lacking in postmarketing data and information pertaining to evidence-based medicine. Furthermore, physicians voiced concern regarding the time it takes for news and updates to reach them.

"It is not a huge surprise that primary care physicians point to so many information gaps given the numerous resources they must sort through to find relevant information," said June Manning, VerusMed's editor-in-chief. "The sheer diversity of what these physicians must know can seem intimidating, not to mention the speed at which medical science continues to evolve. It's definitely a challenge just trying to keep up."

When asked which areas they are most interested in reading about, the primary care physicians who participated in the information needs assessment chose effectiveness of drug treatments, followed closely by prevention and diagnosis of medical conditions. They are also interested in information about screening, side effects of treatments and quality of care. The type of information they consider most valuable includes treatment guidelines, FDA news, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, case studies and Phase III studies.

Moreover, the survey revealed that primary care physicians, like physicians in more specialized practices, still rely on medical journals, conferences and other peer interactions as their primary resources for gaining new knowledge. Primary care physicians also are similar to specialists in that they have not fully embraced new media technology. The majority of those polled said they still prefer to receive their information through the mail, followed closely by e-mail.

"The findings show that primary care physicians still rely on select information resources and delivery modes," said Scott McQuigg, CEO of ConnectivHealth, parent company of VerusMed, which provides clinical news briefs to physicians and other health care professionals. "Therefore, anyone wanting to connect to primary care physicians must work within these specific channels while increasing the selectivity of their information-and the precision with which they deliver it."

During the last decade, VerusMed has used its ongoing survey process to shape content development and delivery of future publications for physicians in multiple and diverse therapeutic areas. To request a full report, e-mail us at physiciandata@verusmed.com.

Time-Starved Oncologists Still Not Receiving Crucial Medical Information -- VerusMed Survey Reveals Vital Health Care Information Gaps

(Nashville, Tenn., March 7, 2007) -- Despite having no shortage of medical news and information resources, oncologists still say they are missing key health care information in several areas that are critical to their clinical practice, finds a VerusMed information needs survey of more than 100 oncologists.

Even though nearly half of oncologists surveyed spend three or more hours per week trying to keep current with advancements in cancer treatment, many say that they are still lacking essential information regarding post-marketing studies, toxicity management and reimbursement, among other areas.

"This means that the right information in many cases isn't getting through or isn't readily available to oncologists," said Scott McQuigg, CEO of VerusMed, which provides clinical briefings to physicians and other health care professionals. "Because of the demands of their practice and patient care, oncologists are limited in the amount of time they can invest in routine medical reading. Considering this, it's incumbent on anyone who provides information to oncologists to be more specific about what, when, and how medical information is delivered."

The physician needs assessment asked oncologists to identify information gaps in the oncology community, revealing physician perspectives on promising drug treatments and the types of cancer information they are most interested in reading.

"Out of the several information gaps oncologists identified in the survey, information on post-marketing studies was one of the more significant areas because it focuses on real-world clinical experience," said Sean Tape, Oncology Editor at VerusMed. "Physicians want to know how patients throughout the entire population are responding to a drug."

The survey also found that out of the numerous ways to receive medical information, oncologists still rely on medical journals, conferences and other peer interactions as their primary knowledge resources.

Surprisingly, the physician information needs assessment also discovered that oncologists are not adopting new media technology very quickly. When asked to pick their top two preferences for receiving medical information, many said they still rely on traditional and electronic mail, followed closely by fax delivery.

"What this tells us is that although PDAs, Web portals, and product Web sites hold a lot of promise for improving information dissemination, these mediums have not yet proven enough value for busy oncologists to change their information consumption habits," said McQuigg.

Over the last decade, VerusMed has used its ongoing survey process to inform content development and delivery of future publications for oncologists, neurologists and rheumatologists, among many other specialists. To request a full report, go to physiciandata@verusmed.com.

The results revealed a large number of information gaps in each specialty and unveiled preferences from physicians and health care providers on how they would like to receive new and relevant information on updates and breakthroughs in their specialties. As a result, the survey insights are particularly valuable to pharmaceutical companies, health plans and hospital systems who routinely communicate with physicians.

"With the pressures of practicing medicine making literature research increasingly more difficult, we found that 42% of physicians are spending more than three hours per week just trying to keep up with medical information," said Scott McQuigg, CEO of VerusMed. "Our needs analyses highlight important considerations for companies who communicate with physicians." The analyses further revealed that with so much information coming from clinical journals, promotional messaging, patient requests and directives from health systems and health plans, time-starved physicians appreciate help focusing their reading on topics of greatest interest and relevance to their specialty. "The issue we uncovered is not the volume of information, but that physicians appreciate appropriate information organized and delivered based on their preferences," said McQuigg.

Leveraging its 12-year expertise in developing concise, timely and objective information for physicians, coupled with results from the physician information needs analyses, VerusMed is developing a series of publications for physician specialists in Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Cardiology, and Dermatology. By understanding information topics of greatest interest, preferred publication length and delivery channel by therapeutic area, VerusMed will continue to provide concise, relevant and easy-to-access publications designed to meet clinician information needs.

A copy of the physician information needs assessment by therapeutic area is available from VerusMed by contacting Jeffrey Caplan, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing at 615-482-1925 or jeff.caplan@verusmed.com.

Medical Information Provider, Faxwatch, Changes Name to VerusMed

Company Also Announces New Investors and Leadership

(Scottsdale, Ariz., April 3, 2006) -- Faxwatch, a leader in providing medical information to physicians and other healthcare professionals, announced today that they have changed the name of the company to VerusMed. Company executives decided it was time to evolve the Faxwatch name to VerusMed, a name that better reflects its market connectivity and commitment to being a trusted source for medical news and information.

VerusMed stands for "Truth in Medicine" and further emphasizes the company's core values of providing objective and relevant medical news and information. With plans in place to expand the company's service lines over the next year, leaders of the company felt they needed a name that demonstrates the company's growing information delivery capabilities and will serve as a platform for future product offerings.

The company also announced that it has received a majority investment from two different investment groups. Petra Capital Partners of Nashville, Tenn., and Chrysalis Ventures of Louisville, Ky., joined the company's founder, John Marchica, as investors. Terms of the investments have not been disclosed. However, the two investment firms have identified it as significant and plan to continue to invest in the company's growth and expand the company's product offerings. The investors have named healthcare information industry veteran Scott McQuigg as the company's President and CEO, replacing Marchica, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in clinical epidemiology at Dartmouth Medical School and who remains a member of the company's Board of Directors. McQuigg was most recently the founder and former CEO of HealthLeaders, a leading healthcare business media and research company.

"VerusMed has a proven history of helping time-starved physicians and healthcare professionals cut through the clutter, getting to the essence of medical news and information so they can focus on patient care. As we grow our information service offerings, VerusMed will continue its work in helping companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and managed care industries build rapport with our audience of healthcare professionals," said McQuigg.

"Our mission has not changed and we will continue providing relevant, concise and objective medical information," said June Manning, VerusMed Editor-in-Chief. "Our goal is to help healthcare professionals focus their medical reading and education, and doing so in a format that saves them time and improves patient care."

VerusMed, founded in 1994, helps physicians and healthcare professionals stay abreast of the latest medical advancements across key therapeutic areas and industry segments. Ranging from Neuroscience to Men's Health to Oncology and more than 40 other specialty service areas, VerusMed's publications are all produced by the company's staff of highly experienced medical writers and editors on a daily basis.
