What's This?
The
Food and Drug Administration designated
Cytokinetics Inc.'s lead drug candidate, CK-2017357, an orphan drug for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
The company plans to initiate a Phase II study of the investigational agent in patients with this disease during the first half of this year.
CK-2017357 selectively activates the fast skeletal troponin complex by increasing its sensitivity to calcium, leading to an increase in skeletal muscle force, Cytokinetics noted. The compound could have potential application for treating diseases associated with aging, muscle wasting and neuromuscular dysfunction, it added.
Cytokinetics previously indicated it is moving away from the oncology area to focus its internal research and development efforts on muscle function and related therapeutic applications.
