What's This?
The
California Supreme Court made a unanimous ruling that protects patients from a practice called "balance billing," according to The Henry J. Kaiser Foundation. When patients seek care from out-of-network physicians and hospitals, their health maintenance organization generally reimburses these providers with lower fees. Then, the providers seek the remainder of the charges from the patients. However, the new ruling prohibits emergency department physicians and hospitals from bringing the issue to patients and directs them to work with the HMO.
