The Dane County Board is considering a proposal to partner with a Canadian company to allow county employees and residents to import prescription drugs, according to an Associated Press report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The supervisors who proposed the plan said it would save hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.
"Dane County government last year paid $3 million for prescription drug claims," said Dave de Felice, one of the supervisors who proposed the plan. "The cost for prescription drugs at the Dane County jail was $415,000. Cutting those costs would mean a significant savings for taxpayers," he added.
Members of the board recently met with a Wisconsin health care consulting company that represents CANUSA, a drug importing company based in Ontario, to learn how the importation plan works.
Several committees will review the proposal before the board votes, possibly in January, according to the report.
